Plagiarism is presenting someone else’ s work or ideas as your own, with or without their consent, by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgement. All published and unpublished material, whether in manuscript, printed or electronic form, is covered under this definition. And the universities’ rules for this always be really strict, but different universities have different plans to deal with the students who break the plagiarism rules.
Some universities hate the plagiarism very much, they will make strict rules and heavy punishments for them. For example, after my research, and I found Kent State University. Which was really serious about plagiarism behaviors. Firstly, the teachers or professors will send you a message to tell you that you may had been found by someone else you had cheated. That is to give you an opportunity to explain. Then you can choose to write a letter about disagree or confirm you actually did. If they had confirmed you actually cheated, there will may happen three things, (a) refuse to accept the credits for that assignment, (b) give an zero to the student for that assignments, and (c) fail the student for the entire class. Any of these will influence that student’s course.
Other universities they also have rules for being plagiarism, but it was not that strict. For example the Oxford University. If the school had caught the Oxford students were cheating, they will make online courses for them, rather than give them heavy punishments like what Kent State did. Because they believe that they did that must for some their reasons, so we should not punish them. Their goal is to avoid these things, to providing them online course is a good way to solving this problem base on their research. However, they still will teach them and let them remember the importance of do not plagiarism. No matter it’s book, article, images, or videos, the owners owned their rights. Even included the words data or paper wrote by students, or lectures.
So in sum, although schools all have their way to deal with cheated students, but they all confirmed on idea: behavior like plagiarism is totally wrong and illegal.
Plagiarism Rules at American Universities
Plagiarism is a typical and ordinary type of rule or law which is widely used in many social places such as our schools, the headquarter of companies and even in our government. In many universities, this is also a popular and serious one. Let’s take an example of the college that I have just gone – UCI (University of California, Irvine). As far as I know, the students in that college are not supposed and allowed to copy others’ intellectual knowledge. For example, the students couldn’t take others’ homework or project to deal with their own classes. If you do it, you will get an 0 in your current class for the whole quarter. If there is the second time or a serious accident, therefore you will be kicked out. Those information is all stated and posted on the www.uci.edu, and I found them one by one carefully. In my opinion, the clearest difference between Chinese and American universities is the using of the plagiarism. In most of the Chinese universities, the professors and scholars do not care them a lot. Although it won’t affect a lot in China, it is opposite in the US. In the future, I will take an fantastic adventure to the US universities, I definitely will follow these directions and never get into the bad troubles.
