Light painting self-reflection
We have an interesting project during photograph these days—Light painting! I took some picture in this project. My first picture is my name-Sophia. I took it at the night which had lunar eclipse. There is a red moon in the sky, and we just wrote some interesting stuff use flashlight. We also wrote something else but I haven’t post it. The second picture is a blue swan; I took it in my home. It means the story of <<The Ugly Duckling>>. The ugly duckling finally became a graceful white swan, I hope I can become mature and sophisticated just like the ugly duckling. In the third picture, there is a shining bike, we use firework outlined it so it looks shining and beautiful. I like the color pink and I like to ride bicycle and go to traveling. In the final picture, I was playing my Chinese traditional musical instrument—Guzheng. I like the tone of it very much and I usually play it in order to calm.
When we took the first photo, we had three persons to do six letters—SOPHIA. It is very difficult to write to different letter in two hands in the same time, so we have a hard experience. When we took second picture, I just use glow stick to draw that swan and that is very beautiful. In the third picture, I used small fireworks to draw it, but the quality of the fire work is not good, it may just burn for a very short time. We took more than 10 photos and we finally get a good one. We took the last picture in my dorm. The new technology of it is we use the music sigh in our phone to make it float in the air. Jessie use a cardboard to hide the screen and show it, then she changed a place and show it again. Alice use the flashlight to flash me when I sat on the chair, then I just use the colorful glow stick to draw the line. I think we had took a great picture.
Through this project, I learned how to do light painting and it is very interesting. I never think we can do things like this before, I think it is only the artists job. Although we are normal people, we still can do some cool stuffs. Also, I recognized the importance of cooperation because light painting needs a bunch of people to do it together. I think it is really a meaningful project.

A Bart’s thoughts
I have made a lot of wonderful pictures during the studying of light painting and got to know more about photography. Light painting is a really hard thing to do well. You need to think out ideas, these ideas must come out from your own brain and they have to be original. You need to observe the environment for taking pictures and change the settings of cameras correctly. Deciding the equipment and the position to put the cameras are also important. After all these things, you will probably need some trustable partners there to help you get the pictures done. You need to organise them painting, posing, or shooting. And you need to have the ability to describe the image in your mind to your partners. Other things are only about patience and trying. As long as you tried, the picture will be close to the image in your mind. Sometimes it even shows up better.
Light Painting Self-Reflection
My first image shows me with a soccer ball, and what my image is trying to show is me playing my favorite sport some techniques I used where flashing to make me look like I’m playing soccer, but we used a flash light because someone lost the flash device. My second image shows me having a crown on, and what this means is that I’m my own leader, and don’t listen to anyone else who is rude. How I did this was, I used three people one to be the model, one to draw the crown and one to take the photo, and we used pink flash to create the crown and hearts. The third photo, shows me with a rainbow background. The meaning to this is that Im happy, fun and creative. For my last picture it is my name, and I chose my name because I really admire my name. We stood in the cold, and we got different flash light, and we spelled out different names. We chose to stand out because that night the moon had an eclipse. One of us stood on top of a building and one stood on the bottom to get the right picture.
But, the cons about this project is that we wouldn’t have the right equipment because everyone else would us it, or someone would take the room we would want to use. Also my teammates had other homework to do, so they couldn’t help me as much. The struggle of this project is that you would have to take so many pictures until you go the perfect one and you had to learn technique to get a interesting photo. The success about this was that we had enough people to do certain things, for example to be the model, take the picture or draw. Another good thing is that we had enough time to do this assignment. Also I would learn cool techniques in photo club, and I learned how make a fire and I would use it for my real photos.
I learned many things about light painting, like how to work camera settings which is really great information to learn. I also learned tricks I can do with light in light painting pictures. But if I had more time to do this assignment I would want to know more about settings and more ways to use tools to make a specific type of light form. Overall I liked this assignment, taught me cool things.

This light painting site 2008, but in the 1990’s thats when he took his first light painting picture. He started while he was taking a picture of a metal band and moved the camera away and after that he was fascinated with the stray of light. He became first famous for his flowers. Dana Maltby is one of today’s most well-known and highly respected light painting artist. He also created tools and techniques for light painting. He is known for not only his imagery but also his kindness to tell us his secrets. He became a light painter when he was following his other career and he accidentally dropped the camera and saw a row a light.
He is Canadian and has won numerous awards for his work. He has been a photographer for over 20 years and has lived in Tokyo, and New York. He started light painting in1992, and in 1997 he declared himself an official light painter. He also has an alias which is just Partick the light painter.
According to introduction online, he’s the father of light painting. I believe light painting appeared earlier than 1967, but Chamberlain was the one who invented the term “light painting”. He went to institution to pursue a degree in fine art. I believe this is what gave him technological support for him to do light painting. In his artwork we can see his talent. A lot of his pictures were not tracking the light movement but tracking the tracks it leaves on objects. He used different light to color objects, and then shoot these dyed objects. His use of color was dreamlike. A lot of bright colors appeared in his photo, but they never seemed noisy or crowded. They worked well together to create a wonderland. I guess his inspirations mainly came from his fancy.
This artist was famous at light painting portrays. He was a full time light painting photographer but famous in automotive world as well. One thing I really love about him is that he love to think of inspirations while he was working on big works. He also stayed in Japan for ten years just because when he went to an exhibition there he fell in love with the city. I can tell he’s an activist. A lot of his art works demonstrate human faces in a demonic way. The realistic faces contradict with the horrible light, thus creating a sense of absurdity. These portrays can transfer feelings and emotions that cannot be described in language.
He is remarked as one of the most well-known artist. I can tell that he is very good at shape and pattern. These techniques he used was shared willingly to the mass. (I would say that these talented people are not afraid of sharing, for they are confident enough) He was a forefront photographer in light painting world, for he uses creative tools to help paint the picture. His inspirations came from daily basis, but he can create such astonishing and powerful pictures. By looking at his picture, you can feel power floating in a steady but strong way, like religious symbols.
JanLeonardo started off as a self-educated person in photography, preferably working at nighttime. Later on he became assistant of Reinhart-Wolf- Award laureate Stephan Meyer-Bergfeld. As an artist he works exclusively with bulb exposure in darkness or nighttime since 2005. His personal challenge is patterned, controlled and choreographed artificial light, staged and organized in a performance. His photographies are easily mixed up with photos altered by image editing or digital images from scratch.
In 2013 JanLeonardo initiated the International Light Painting Award to internationally promote light art performance photography and light painting. The recipients are chosen bi-annually by an international jury consisting of representatives from industry and the arts. In 2013 the award was endowed with non-cash prizes worth of €9,800.
