What is Light Painting?
“Light painting, or light drawing, is a photographic technique in which exposures are made by moving a hand-held light source while taking a long exposure photograph, either to illuminate a subject or to shine a point of light directly at the camera, or by moving the camera itself during exposure. from wikipedia.
In my own word, light painting is a kind of ways to take photos with some special technology which is depending on physics or optics. We try to control the number and degree of lights to get what kinds of pictures that we want. Through light painting, we can get a few amazing photos that we can only image in our dream or only get it by Photoshop.
How does it works and required settings
“Light painting using handheld lights to selectively illuminate or colour parts of the subject or scene or to evenly light large architectural interiors has been used in professional photography since the 1930s as described by Leslie Walker and Ansel Adams. Light painting requires a slow shutter speed, usually at least a second in duration according to Wiki.
By using optics, the canema will have a “memory” (all the light that have been shown, will be a part of the picture). Also we take the picture in the dark, thus, the light will be more outstanding and will have a different vision. What’s more, in light painting, we will use shutter speeed, f-number and ISO to adjust our light, time and quality. All above are my understanding. Also, as for setting the light is important. That means: the light can not be too much or too small. To get it, we adjust with ISO, shutter speed and F-number. But ISO will influence its quality.
Equipments and materials
“A variety of light sources can be used, ranging from simple flashlights to dedicated devices like the Hosemaster, which uses a fiber optic light pen. Other sources of light including candles, matches, fireworks, lighter flints, glowsticks, and Poi are also popular. A tripod is usually necessary due to the long exposure times involved from Wiki.
As for me, I think there are two main equipments. One is canema for taking photos, the other one is a tripod for stable when shutter speed is a very small or big number so that the taken pictures will not be blur. As for the materials is light and objects that you want to use. For lights, we have a few choices as light such as flash light, Christmas light or the light from our mobile phones. As for objects, that will depend on what you want to tell.
